The Bluegrass
Mention the word "Bluegrass" in any corner of the world and immediately eyes alight in recognition! The Bluegrass Region, a five county area spread across north-central Kentucky, is a land of lush green pastures flanked by miles of impeccable white fences-some of nature's most beautiful countryside populated primarily by one of God's most magnificent creations, the thoroughbred.
It's that legendary bond between Kentuckians and the horse that is the cornerstone of our world-wide fame. But there's much more to life in the Bluegrass! We live in a land of endless variety; of diverse people and lifestyles, of unlimited business and personal opportunities, of performing arts and outdoor recreation, and of excellent "quality-of-life" characteristics and features.
Look for a definition for the unsurpassed quality of life in the Bluegrass and you'll focus on one word: diversity. No matter what your pleasures, no matter what your work, no matter what the extremes-an elegant, candlelight dinner or a picnic on the grassy banks of a country stream...a night at the ballet or an afternoon at the races...sampling blue-ribbon pies at a county fair or sipping mint juleps on the veranda...the excitement of unsurpassed collegiate athletics...or the tranquility of your favorite fishing hole.
Lexington and the Bluegrass area offers an amazing array of lifestyle choices: high-rise condominiums in the heart of the financial district, quiet suburban streets lined with towering pin oaks, small farms along twisting country roads, refurbished Victorian mansions shaded by ancient elms, exquisite new subdivisions featuring neo-traditional homes...and, within 10 minutes drive in any direction: the unsurpassed beauty of horse country.
It's all here in Lexington and the fabulous Bluegrass Region. From the amenities of a major city to the allure of the rural countryside, from pristine forests to small-town main streets, our area offers you a choice of lifestyles and pursuits that are limited only by your enthusiasm!
Kentucky is known as the "Bluegrass State" because of the abundant growth of bluegrass on its rich limestone soil. Reports say that early pioneers found it growing in the state when they crossed the Allegheny Mountains. Traders began to ask for the seed of the "blue grass from Kentucky" and the name stuck. Bluegrass is not really blue-it's green. But in the spring, bluegrass produces bluish-purple buds that, when seen in large fields, give a rich blue cast to the grass.
